In January 1776, Thomas Paine published a pamphlet he titled "Common Sense" which electrified the American colonies.  Paine demanded freedom from Britain when even fervent patriots of  Britain were only revolting against excessive taxation.  His daring prose spurred passage of the Declaration of Independence and turned a good many of these patriots of Britain into American revolutionaries who sided with George Washington's campaign to free the colonies and form an independent nation which came to be known as The United States of America.
